Daniel
Allan Dirks
December
8, 1962 July 7, 2001
Daniel was born
December 8, 1962 at Wichita, KS. He was the son of John and Ruth (Stephens)
Dirks. Dan was educated in the Derby
School system. He continued his education at Wichita State U. and the
Southwestern Theological Seminary at Forth Worth, TX where he received a
Ph.D. On August 23, 1986 he married
Charlotte Rutledge at the Welcome Baptist Church, Greenville, SC.
Dan pastored
Inspiration Point Baptist Church while attending Seminary. Dan and Charlotte

Convention and served there for five years.

Sedgwick County Association of Southern Baptists. Dan enjoyed sports and his family.

sister, Diane Madden of Andover; parents, John and Ruth Dirks of Derby.
Daniel Allan Dirks
Danny Dirks, a Southern Baptist who
worked near Brasilia, Brazil, four years ago, said he was always concerned when
he had to drive at night. He said most drivers don't stop at red lights for
fear of being robbed and traffic was generally chaotic.
“The one rule was: If your nose of your
vehicle was in front, you had the right of way," Dirks said.
The danger was brought home when a
missionary he knew died after a head-on collision.
"It doesn't happen very often, but
we all recognize that that could easily be us because we're all driving at
different times," he said.
Dirks, who currently attends
Pleasantview Baptist Church in Derby, said there were other dangers. For
example, if someone thought you had money, you could be robbed. And it didn't
matter if you were an American. "Brazilians have the same dangers,"
Dirks said.
Nevertheless, he said he enjoyed his'
work as a missionary, party because people talked about their faith more openly
there than in this country.
"I did not ever feel in danger
because I was a missionary," he said.

The staff members here a the NGSC
recently said good-bye to our dear friend and co-worker Eileen Gerdes, Eileen
recently lost her 4-month battle with cancer at the age of 64 and was called
home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
ileen came to work with us here at NGSC
in May of 2001 as L.P.N. Eileen often sang to the residents at meal time during
holidays. She had a beautiful voice and gladly shared it with us all. Eileen
and her band "The Country Singers" have performed for our residents
for the past two years at our annual Valentine's Dance. Her presence and voice
will surely be missed, but will never be forgotten. Eileen had a heart of gold
and gave all she had to our residents. She and her husband Karl enjoyed camping
in the summer with their dog Ginger. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening,
canning and oil painting. It wasn't till the age of 50 that she enrolled in

We Called Him Dad
We remember going to softball games in
Fairbury, Western, Dewitt, Seward and Lincoln and watching him pitch to some of
the best players in the area. Seeing his competitive nature is now ours.
Playing high school basketball games and
hearing only one voice.
(It wasn't the coaches either.)
Watching him come home from plowing snow
during the long winter days and nights. His pride really showed when we drove
through other Districts and he bragged about his roads being in better shape.
Watching him play pitch at family
birthday parties with Uncle Marvin, Uncle Wayne, Uncle Dave, Uncle Louie, Uncle
Bill, Uncle Virgil, "Uncle" Harlan, "Uncle" Bennie, and his
nephew Bill.
(Hamm's tasted awful good back then.)
Making sure we got" up before 5:30
am and had our newspapers delivered before 6:30 am. On the day we went to the
State Fair, we were up at 4am so we could deliver the Sunday paper. That was so
we could get to the Kiwanis building before 6:30 am to eat breakfast. We
couldn't wait for lunch because Mom and Aunt Joyce made fried chicken along
with tomatoes, cantaloupe, and brownies.
(What time does the Midway open?)
(How many glasses did we win at the dime
toss?)
Taking us out to hunt with Uncle Dave
and Uncle Marv on Saturdays.
(We were the dogs.)
(Lunch at Swanton for chili and a
hamburger. YESSS!)
Taking his grandsons out for a drive.
(In his toy, the AMT.)
Going down to the creek to cut and split
wood. Taking Sunday afternoon drives around the Fairbury -Jansen - and Plymouth
area and having to listen to the only music ever made to listen to ..... POLKA.
UGGHH!!!
He could not sit and listen to any
Husker game.
(It made him nervous.)
(Turn that damn radio off) (By the way
what's the score?)
The pride he had in his tools and the
tractors he rebuilt and owned.
(Those damn cats are sitting on the
seats.)
Taking us to the Esquire Club in Lincoln
or the Friend Country Club for special times. (What's a Pink Squirrel??)
Going down to the Western Goose Feed and
realizing just how many people he knew.
Taking us on vacation and always finding
the time to take us boys to a professional baseball game. He loved watching
baseball. (Sitting in Busch Stadium in 100 degree heat for a STL/ATL dbl
header.)
(He loved the Yankees.)
(Couldn't stand the Royals.)
(He'd root for the Cub's for Uncle
Frank.) (George Brett cheated to win the batting title one year because he didn't
play the final day.)
His love for the church and God. His
deep voice could be heard through everyone else's.
Remember our Father,
as a son
as a brother
as a brother-in-law as a husband
as a father
as a father-in-law as a grandpa
as a friend
We called him DAD.
